Boston 1st XV 6 Worksop 1st XV 24

Boston’s hopes of avoiding relegation, were dealt a severe blow as they lost away to Worksop. Despite a performance of endeavour and grit, they could not match the powerful Worksop forwards, whose ability to win turnover ball cost Boston dearly. Before the game, Worksop were placed below them in the league occupying one of the bottom two places, the blue and whites now sit there with Barton and District.

For a game of such importance Boston wanted their preparations and personnel to avoid any injuries. As ever when lady luck is against you, this did not happen. The visitors were forced to reshuffle their players when one player failed to turn up and within minutes of the game starting full back Perry Cumber picked up an injury, which he played on with throughout the game literally on one leg.

Given this back drop, it was not surprising that a fired up Worksop team scored first, from an unstoppable line out catch and drive to lead 5 points to nil. Boston spent the majority of the first half camped in their own half. Boston were trying to utilise their backs and with Tom Kemps good service, were looking threatening, however crucially they lacked a cutting thrust, despite eth best efforts of Richard Justice to break free. A quickly taken tap penalty by Worksop, saw them extend their lead after 20 minutes to 12 points to nil.

Boston, did fight back straight from the kick off to earn a penalty which Tom Brooks converted, another penalty by Brooks and a third try by Worksop took the side into a 6 points to 17 deficit.

At this stage there was still hope, however slim, that Boston could stage a fight back. It was crucial that they score first and exert pressure on the home side. Alas a missed tackle gifted Worksop a soft try after 10 minutes of the restart to effectively seal victory for Worksop. Shortly after this Tom Kemp, went off injured and Nigel Lanes joined the action, with Dave Betteridge moving to scrum half. To Boston’s credit, for the last 15 minutes they played all the rugby, as they desperately sought to score a consolation try, with Tom Brooks coming the closest to scoring.

At the final whistle, Boston knew that with only 4 league games remaining, that they have to secure at least one win to avoid the drop. They have two home and 2 away fixtures. Next week they travel to Kesteven.
